What is NCLEX – MCQ exam?

MCQ stands for Multiple-Choice Question and most of the questions in the NCLEX exam are multiple-choice questions. NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of Nursing) develops the question papers and takes the NCLEX examinations through Pearson VUE test centers. NCSBN has the authorization to change the exam format and question types.

I. Safe and Effective Care Environment: Questions in this section are related to patient care, pediatric patients’ safety, prevention of injuries and infections, laboratory tests, etc. Approximately 21% to 33% of questions are asked from this section in an NCLEX exam.

II. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Questions in this section deals with pregnancy symptoms and complications, labor, delivery, infant care, birth control measures, pregnancy prevention, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. Approximately 12% of questions are asked from this category in the NCLEX exam.

III. Psychological Integrity: Questions related to psychiatric problems, anxiety disorders, organic mental disorders, crisis intervention, substance abuse, schizophrenia, etc falls under this section in the NCLEX exam. Approximately 12% of NCLEX questions are asked in this section.

IV. Physiological Integrity: Questions in this section deal with diabetes, skin disorders, infectious diseases, renal diseases, neurological disorders, respiratory diseases, etc. Most of the NCLEX questions are asked from this section: from 43% to 67% of questions fall under this category.

NCLEX is totally computerized exam. The computer gives you a question based on how you answered the previous one. The NCLEX scored is determined by one’s ability to think critically about decisions involving nursing care in the NCLEX exam.
